Nowadays, the phrase “happy hour” is entrenched in the public’s perception of cocktails, However, the origins (like most things throughout the culinary and drink world) are a mystery. Although there are a few facts available, it’s difficult to establish the definitive history of how these two terms became one. In the 1920s, the expression “happy hour,” was utilized by the Navy to describe a time of pre-planned athletics or for other activities when they were on the sea for long periods of time.

In the 1920s, due to a social experiment that failed known as Prohibition and the emergence of a new generation of citizens, people were gathered in the evenings prior to dinner to drink illegal drinks at the speakeasy or at in their homes. Soon after, the two concepts merged, and people started employing the phrase frequently in reference to a good time having a drink with friends in the afternoon hours and into the early evening time.
