History

The year 1947 was when Lovie Yancey established a 3-stool stand for hamburgers situated in Los Angeles, California. She made use of scrap material to construct this stand for hamburgers. The stand was named “Mr. Fatburger”. Lovie Yancey came up the name, influenced by the notion of a large burger with everything. She wanted to ensure this image was prominently displayed to the customers. The year 1952 saw Lovie Yancey dropped the “Mr.” from the name of the stand. The stand then changed its name to “Fatburger”. Customers could customize their hamburgers by contacting Lovie on the counter. Her clients included entertainers like Redd Foxx and Ray Charles.

Lovie Yancey worked hard days and evenings in the meat stand. It was widely known that her hamburgers were among the top burgers around town. In the end, Lovie received many requests to open her restaurant late into the evening. Lovie chose to open a second store in 1973. The second location was inaugurated in 1973 on La Cienega Boulevard in West Los Angeles. The location quickly became a hot spot for nightclub goers. Lovie began to offer franchises in the year 1981. In 1990 she sold the store to an investment company called Johnson Development Corporation, which was owned by Magic Johnson.

The year 2003 saw Fog Cutter Capital Group, Inc. purchased a Restaurant chain. The restaurant was initially located in a California chain, but it was not until the mid-nineties when Lovie began franchising. The franchising process led to the expansion of the store throughout in the United States. The store expanded further after the acquisition of Fog Cutter Capital Group, Inc. There are more than 200 restaurants spread across 19 countries. A few among the U.S. locations can be located in the following states: California, Nevada, and Colorado. Some examples of international locations are: Pakistan, Oman, Canada and Canada, and the United Kingdom. Each of these places continues to serve burgers in the same manner they did when Lovie did in the past.

Fatburger has gained a lot of attention due to references to the restaurant in hip-hop music. For instance, “Going Back to Cali” by the Notorious BIG, “It Was A Good Day” by Ice Cube, and “Late Night” by Tupac Shakur. For a time in 2006, the chain was banned from selling franchises to other stores in California. The store has a lot of famous investors. As we said, Magic Johnson was an owner of the parent company. Montel Williams co-owns several locations in Colorado. Other owners of famous names and former owners include E-40 Queen Latifah, Pharrell, and Kanye West.
